Why Your Foundation Pills After Five Layers of Skincare

3 min read

It's 8:40 a.m. Serum, essence, cream, primer, sunscreen. You swipe on foundation, and tiny crumbs roll up under your fingertips. Sound familiar?

Los Angeles

It's Not You. It's the Combo.

Those crumbs are called pilling, and they work a lot like sweater fuzz. Many products leave a thin film as they settle. Rub the next layer over it, and that film can roll into little balls.

In one study of 528 women who deal with pilling, about 4 in 10 saw it happen while layering skincare, sunscreen and foundation. Interestingly, one product on clean skin almost never pilled. The trouble came from pairs. The same sunscreen acted differently depending on what sat underneath it, and some women only pilled when two products met. Two products that are each fine on their own can still clash.

Foundation Gets Blamed for Sunscreen's Mess

In that same study, the crumbs mostly showed up right after sunscreen, not after foundation. So by the time foundation goes on, the problem may already be sitting one layer down.

How you apply mattered, too. Rubbing in circles or back and forth led to the most pilling. So try patting or pressing instead.

The crumbs showed up just as often on the forehead as on the cheeks. No part of the face got a free pass.

Your Skin Brings Something to the Mix

The women whose foundation pilled had drier, less oily skin and slightly higher skin pH. Oddly, their skin was also a little smoother. (pH tells you how acidic the skin's surface is, and healthy skin runs a little acidic.)

In short, simplifying your routine can help prevent pilling. Fewer layers mean fewer chances for products to clash, and fewer rounds of rubbing.

Try This Tomorrow

  1. Audit your shelf. Two products that both promise "hydration"? You may only need one.
  2. Press, don't rub. Pat each layer in with flat palms, and give it a moment before the next.
  3. Play detective. Still pilling? Swap one product at a time to find the pair that won't get along.

The simple order: cleanse, one light moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation.
